Ceiling Fan 101

How Ceiling Fan Installation Can Help in Any Season

While it may be tempting to rely on your heater and AC when you need to adjust the temperature in your rooms, a ceiling fan can be very advantageous. For one thing, a ceiling fan doesn’t draw nearly as much energy as an air conditioner, even at the highest ceiling fan speed. Right off the bat, they can save you money on your monthly utility bills.

In the following post, we will give you a crash course on how to use your ceiling fans to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. We are Hoover Electric and we provide professional ceiling fan installation in Clinton Township & Troy, MI. Schedule your ceiling fan service today!

Ceiling Fan Direction

Have you noticed that little 2-position switch right above or underneath the blades of your fan? It’s not an off/on switch. It’s actually one of the most useful features of your ceiling fan. Take a closer look, and you may see little symbols on either side of that switch. One may be a sun, and the other may be a snowflake. What that switch does is control the direction that the blades spin. In “winter” mode, the blades spin clockwise and draw air upward to distribute warm air throughout the room. In “summer” mode, the blades spin counterclockwise and push cool air downward.

Fan Speed Matters

You will want to run your ceiling fans at medium or low speed settings. That’s because ceiling fan speed has a direct impact on energy consumption. The faster your ceiling fan spins, the more energy it draws. That’s why ceiling fan speed matters if you are trying to keep your electricity bills at a minimum. A ceiling fan with light will also affect energy consumption, but not as much as fan speed.

Other Factors to Consider

Many people who have ceiling fans installed in their homes sometimes notice strange sounds or humming. The most common causes of strange noises include loose screws in the fan and the vibration of the motor. In some instances, strange ceiling fan noises may indicate that the motor needs to be lubricated.

If you don’t currently have ceiling fans installed in your home and want to know if they are cost effective, the answer is: it depends. If you make sure to run your fans and set your AC at a higher temperature, they will surely save you money on your utility bills. Plus, installation is usually very affordable.
